My name is Jeff Wright. I live near Ann Arbor, Michigan in a small town called Milan.
I’ve been interested in glass objects, and glass art, for as long as I can remember. It started innocently enough with a trip to the local county fair when I was much younger than I am now. There was a guy there doing engravings on glass goblets and vases - stuff you could buy for a buck or two. But he was doing deep cuts on large bowls - similar to Steuben whenever he had a free moment. Watching him amazed me that glass could be worked in such a manner.
I didn’t act on this until much later - perhaps 30 years later, when I bought a new house with a large picture window. I wanted a nice stained glass piece to hang in this window. But every art fair I attended had pieces in the $600 to $800 range! Too much for me - and I knew I could do it myself. I made a few pieces but never made one for that window.
I was really unhappy with two dimensional work, I’m much prefer three dimensions. I stumbled onto a glass blowing class at the Toledo Museum of Art four years ago and I’ve been working hot glass ever since.
